There’s never enough time or stomach room in Japan, but I always return feeling grateful and full of excitement for the next visit. Every trip leaves me inspired to carry forward the fun and intentions in this lifelong passion project we choose to call work. I always make time to visit family friends’ restaurants when I go back, and one of the highlights of this trip was visiting @torimitsu_tokyo, run by Chef Takuhei. We’ve known each other since we were kids, and though decades had passed since we last met, reconnecting at his new yakitori restaurant warmed my heart. His love for exploring food keeps him open to experimentation, and he even hand-selects and grinds the herbs for his house-made sansho and shichimi. Using dehydrated peels of wild, ancestral mikan in his spice blends. Mama @wasabikko sewing on my sisters button that fell off while we eat, it’s all the little things that make each outing so unforgettable. Cherish your special aunties @kakochandahyo who know the og places and even at 12am, show up and don’t miss the ride. But above all, what I love most are the new experiences and the opportunity to share my long-standing relationships in Japan with my close friends from Hawaii. There are so many trending places that blow up on social media, but I hope your travels cultivate genuine relationships with the people you meet—so you can visit them again and continue to pass on the joy you felt in each experience.
